Parliamentary support

On 21 January 2009 Prime Minister Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Nick Clegg and lots of other MPs pledged their support for Time to Change and an end to mental health discrimination.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown explains why he is supporting Time to Change;

"So many families up and down the country have been at one time or another affected by mental illness, and yet so often we find it hard to talk about these problems. The Time to Change campaign is important because it aims to change attitudes to mental illness so that more people can find the support and encouragement they need to make the most of their talents and achieve their ambitions."

David Cameron pledged his support and says;

“Everybody knows somebody with a mental illness. There are as many people with mental illnesses in the UK as there are people living in London, Scotland and Wales put together.

Despite this, there is still a cultural stigma attached to having one. As a result, far too many people don’t seek treatment for their mental health issues, and a shocking number of people suffer discrimination or even violence because of them.

This can’t go on - the only mental health problem we should be prejudiced against is prejudice itself.

We have to get to the point where everyone has the same attitude towards mental health problems as they do to physical health problem, and I offer the Time To Change campaign my wholehearted support in achieving that aim.”
